“Work In Progress”
Performance, 2022
“Work In Progress” is a performance that investigates the behind-the-scenes labor in the gallery space while calling into question ‘the institution’. The performance is actual labor performed by the artist outside of gallery open hours, with an indexical written instruction description saying that “During the duration of the exhibition, the artist will volunteer in the gallery before open hours, offering to fill in for the gallery staff to conduct simple tasks that are related to the maintenance of the exhibition and the gallery space.” By proposing to be an extra hand to whom further tasks can be assigned or outsourced, I point to the systemic pressure of over scheduling and understaffing in the art institutions.
